Legal Authority:
Private, nonprofit corporation organized in 1967 and designated as Santa Barbara County's anti-poverty agency under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.
Membership:
The Community Action Commission appoints 15 Commissioners: 1/3 representing public officials (appointed by designated local government bodies); at least 1/3 low-income community (elected in low-income census tracts), the remainder representing private organizations (appointed by the rest of the Board of Commissioners).
Term:
The members of the Community Action Commission serve four year terms.
Duties:
Funded through local, state and federal sources, CAC currently operates programs designed to serve the needs of the poor, elderly and ethnic minorities through direct service provisions, advocacy and community based social planning. The long-range goals are the realization of equality of opportunity in our society and self-sufficiency in our community.
Meeting Date and Location:
The Commission meets the first Wednesday of every Month; 7:00 P.M. at Andersen’s Pea Soup Restaurant.
